<idAbs>&lt;DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:0 0 11 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;Critical habitat for the Beringia DPS includes marine waters within one specific area in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas, extending from the shoreward boundary to an offshore limit with a maximum water depth of 200 m from the ocean surface within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The shoreward boundary follows the 20-m isobath (relative to MLLW) westward from the eastern limit of the U.S. EEZ in the Beaufort Sea and continuing into the northeastern Chukchi Sea to its intersection with latitude 70°36' N south of Wainwright; then follows the 10-m isobath (relative to MLLW) to its intersection with latitude 65°35' N near Cape Prince of Wales; then follows the 5-m isobath (relative to MLLW) to its intersection with longitude 164°46' W near the mouth of the Kolovinerak River in the Bering Sea, except at Port Clarence Bay where the shoreward boundary is defined as a continuous line across the entrance. The eastern boundary in the Beaufort Sea follows the eastern limit of the U.S. EEZ beginning at the nearshore boundary defined by the 20-m isobath (relative to MLLW), extends offshore to the 200-m isobath, and then follows this isobath generally westward and northwestward to its intersection with the seaward limit of the U.S EEZ in the Chukchi Sea. The boundary then follows the limit of the U.S. EEZ southwestward and south to the intersection of the southern boundary of the critical habitat in the Bering Sea at 60°32'26'' N/179°9'53'' W. The southern boundary extends southeastward from this intersection point to 57°58' N/170°25' W, then eastward to 58°29' N/164°46' W, then follows longitude 164°46' W to its intersection with the nearshore boundary defined by the 5-m isobath (relative to MLLW) near the mouth of the Kolovinerak River. <statement>A polygon was created through a series of data processing steps (vector data were projected in the Alaska Albers coordinate system, WKID: 3338, Authority: ESRI) using ESRI software. The southern extent in the Bering Sea is based on a generalized version of the estimated median April ice edge position line for the 30-year period 1990 to 2019, which was calculated by the Marine Mammal Laboratory using similar methods and data as used by the National Snow and Ice Data Center for the Sea Ice Index. This ice edge contour line was generalized to form a simplified line that retains the general shape of the original line, as described in the final rule. The eastern extent in the Bering Sea is drawn along longitude line 164°46´ W. The western outer extent in the Bering and Chukchi seas and the eastern outer extent in the Beaufort Sea (limits of U.S. EEZ) were mapped using data extracted from NOAA Office of Coast Survey Maritime Limits and Boundaries of United States of America spatial data.
Raster bathymetry datasets were used to derive representations of the 20-m, 10-m, and 5-m isobaths (shoreward extent in Beaufort and northeastern Chukchi seas, remainder of Chukchi Sea, and Bering Sea, respectively) and the 200-m isobath (northern extent in Chukchi and Beaufort seas). These raster datasets are based on bathymetric data from a variety of sources of varying quality and coverage, and the underlying bathymetric data are sparse in some areas. For all but the 5-m depth contour in the area extending along the northwest tip of the Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK) delta and southward, the depth contours were derived from a 20 m x 20 m raster bathymetry dataset developed by NOAA Fisheries Alaska Region. This raster dataset was smoothed using mean focal statistics with a 7 cell circular neighborhood to create a less jagged appearance of the contours derived from the dataset.
Depth contours derived from the 20-m raster dataset were complex and broken in shallow nearshore waters beginning along the northeastern YK delta and extending southward. The 5-m contour derived from the Alaska Regional Digital Elevation Model (ARDEM) dataset, which has a coarser resolution, was therefore used in place of the contour derived from the 20-m raster dataset for that portion of the contour line (contour portion from ARDEM was substituted extending southward from where it intersected with the contour from the 20-m raster dataset off the northeastern tip of the YK delta; this approach was used so as to use the contour from the 20-m raster dataset for most of the mapped area). The ARDEM dataset was smoothed using mean focal statistics with a 3 cell circular neighborhood.
The portion of the 5-m contour extending into Port Clarence Bay was deleted on either side of the entrance to this waterbody and the contour on either side of this entrance was connected by a straight line drawn across the entrance. The contour crossed over the shoreline based on the NOAA Continually Update Shoreline Product (CUSP) on the end of the spit at Port Clarence. Because the CUSP data are considered more accurate than the bathymetric data, where the depth contour crossed over the shoreline, the contour was edited to follow the shoreline, buffered by 10 m seaward to offset it from the shoreline segment in approximate alignment with the contour on the seaward side of the spit.
In one limited area on the north side of Norton Sound (where CUSP shoreline data were not available), the 5- m contour crossed over the shoreline in some places based on the ESRI World Imagery layer. In those places, the contour was edited to follow the shoreline, buffered by 10 m seaward to offset it from the shoreline segments (shoreline segments were heads-up digitized using the ESRI World Imagery layer), in approximate alignment with the remainder of the contour. The 10-m contour was also edited at Prince of Wales shoal, where it narrowed and veered seaward into the area otherwise deeper than 10 m, by drawing a straight line connecting the contour on either side.
The edited depth contours were smoothed (Smoothing Algorithm PAEK, Smoothing Tolerance 100m) and simplified (Simplification Algorithm Retain Critical Points, Simplification Tolerance 1 m) to remove insignificant vertices while retaining the shape of the lines. The 5-, 10-, and -20 m depth contours were then combined using a line drawn at 70°36´ for where the shoreward extent changes from 20 m to 10 m, and a line drawn at 65°35´ N for where the shoreward extent changes from 10 m to 5 m, to trim and connect the depth contours and form one continuous shoreward extent line. The lines representing the southern, northern, other outer, and shoreward extents were combined and converted to a polygon; islands (Alaska 1:63,360) were subsequently erased from the polygon.</statement>
